Description Of Work: Hal designed and built a 6' tall privacy fence running approximately 100', enclosing our back yard. There are three gates, (one with an arbor) and trellises on the long runs of fencing and over the other gates.

Member Comments: I got four estimates from different Angie's list providers, and Hal stood out head and shoulders above the others from the start. As we discussed the project I could tell he was looking at it not only from a practical standpoint, but from a design perspective as well. He took notes and measurements and said he had some ideas, and he'd have to figure out the numbers and get back to me. Less than a week later we met again to go over his ideas and get the project on the calendar. He was extremely flexible with my schedule, agreeing to delay the start more than a couple times as other yard projects were juggled along with my out of town travel. Once work was started Hal and his crew worked efficiently and were fun to be around. He made sure to find out my preference for any design or building consideration that needed a decision, and also made adjustments to suit my taste. The whole project turned out beautifully and I've received many compliments from neighbors and people passing by. I'm very pleased with the result and happy to recommend Hal and his crew.

Description Of Work: I signed up with Angie's list because I know Hal Morris is a member.  I wanted to share my experiences with everyone on Angie's list.  The Porch with Trellis  I have known Hal Morris for approximately 15 years and have seen his work over the course of time.  It was finally time for some serious work to be done on the grounds of my home.  I had no doubts as to who I would call upon for this work.  My porch was very old and appeared to have rotting near the foundation of my home.  I wanted to keep the built in bench that my father built.  I also wanted to add a trellis where I may grow grapes in the near future.  Hal came out, listened to my concerns, and did exactly what I envisioned. I say that he created playground equipment because my son has crawled and climbed all over Hal's structures and they are strong/sturdy enough to hold up through all of this.  Playground structures indeed!

Member comments: Hal Morris was easy to contact.  He came out in a timely manner for a walk through of my wishes.  When it came to the porch, I had some specific and some vague ideas.  Hal listened to what I had to say and asked questions for clarification.  I needed the bench my father built to remain.  I wanted the general shape to stay the same.  I needed the structure of the house where the porch was attached to be checked for decay.  I needed the porch itself to be replaced.  I wanted a trellis to grow grapes and give shade to the seating area.  I have viewed Hal's work and wanted his style yet a little different to go with the style of my home.  Hal did all that I asked in a timely manner and with good graces towards myself and my family.  I highly recommend Hal Morris.

I have to add that my son has been all over Hal's creations and they are strong/sturdy enough to be considered playground equipment!   Member comments: Hal was easy to contact and came to my home for a walk through of my needs in a timely manner.  He listened and asked questions which made me feel heard and that he would work well with me.  He called when he was going to come out so I would know when there would be someone working in my yard.  He was respectful of myself and my family.  When he completed his work, we walked through the project and I saw that he had taken all my needs, requests, and desires and created a garden in which I have pride.

Description Of Work: Installed privacy fences, along with a custom gate in an arbor.

Member comments: This is the second job where we've hired Garden Structures and we could not be happier with the work Hal and crew did. The new fences are a simple design but perfectly attractive. Moreover, they are solidly built (that is a high priority for me). As with our last experience, we found Hal's attention to detail is remarkable. And he is a real problem solver. He first worked to understand our goals and then worked with us to devise a solution. Now, with the structures in place, I feel a sense of relief in our yard. The other part of the job was creating an entry gate for the arbor he previously built. Again, he took our feedback and the result is a unique gate that is now the pleasing focal point of the structure. In our experience, Hal is honest, fair and plain spoken. Exactly what one hopes for in a contractor. A real craftsman.

Description Of Work: I feel very fortunate to have found this contractor on Angie's List.
Judging from all the positive feedback on Angie's List, I thought that if anyone could create the fence I was looking for this guy was probably the one. I had just finished putting in a large waterfall and pond and needed something to help frame the rest of my back yard. I had purchased a rather thick book on lattice fencing a few years ago and showed Hal the picture and asked him if he could duplicate this detailed and   intricate looking fence. He told me it would require a lot of mill work but that was what he was good at. And ............he was!!! The fence not on met my expectations, but it exceeded them. The fence consist of 6 panels and totals approximately 40'. It also has a 14' piece that is supported  about 3-4 ' above and runs parallel to the top fence rail. This added feature really sets this fence apart. Now I can look forward to next Spring when I can put in another planting bed in front of this GREAT looking fence.  Hopefully Hal will post some pictures on his site.

Created/installed trellises and an arbor entrance, with the intention of defining spacing in our back yard while also improving privacy.

Member comments: Overall this was a great experience working with Hal in designing and finishing this project. Hal not only has terrific carpenter skills, but better yet is a real artist when it comes to working with wood and implementing both of our ideas into the finished product.

Description Of Work: Created/installed trellises and an arbor entrance, with the intention of defining spacing in our back yard while also improving privacy.

Member comments: We are very happy with the job Hal and his team did. It is clear that Hal takes great pride in his work, and it shows in his craftsmanship and his attention to detail. What's more, they were all nice to have around--always polite and considerate. Design-wise, our situation is a difficult one: Our backyard is like a "fish bowl" with the way houses and yards surround our property; further, the space lacks definition. Hal worked with us to figure out the best way to solve these issues while beautifying the space. The structures themselves are attractive and extremely well built. For example, he used mortise and tenon joints to attach cross-members, while the posts are footed in concrete that drops below the frost line (we have a lot of clay in our yard, which can weak havoc on structures that aren't properly installed). There are not too many fence-building companies (if any) that will do that, yet those other companies charge at least as much as Hal. The only reason I didn't give a perfect grade is we did hit a few minor snags in communication. Communication is a two-way street, of course, so this is as much our fault as Hal's. If plans would have been drawn up beforehand, these snags probably could have been avoided. We ended up with a few surprises because everything hinged on conversations, written descriptions and references to photos from other jobs he's done. This is why "Punctuality" is a B (it isn't clear where "communication" fits into Angie's rating). Having said that, we are hiring Hal again to do more work. Whatever small communication issues we had I expect will be gone this next time (it's like getting to know someone), and the quality of Hal's work is really impressive

Hal Morris and several workers came the first day and set up the posts after cleaning out weeds and vines in the area the fence would go. We had given Hal the OK to take out these plants and they were very careful not to disturb any other plants in the area. The fence was finished within about two days and looks great. Hal insists on using southern white pine (I think that was what he used)...can't find it listed on past contract. We signed a contract with Hal for a past job but Hal did not produce a contract with us before of after the work that was recently completed. He has been paid. Member Comments:

Working with Hal was a very positive and enjoyable experience; he was prompt and delivered what he said he would and more. He listened to my requirements, made suggestions and presented a design that was workable and unique, reviewed the materials he would use and the steps in the process. He pays attention to the details and to the functionality, has a sense of what will work, how the finished project will look and provided leadership. I've received many compliments on the fence, its uniqueness and artistic interest. He also went above and beyond, crafting details on the gate that fit my arts and crafts Mpls bungalow, used some of the old fence to create an additional barrier at the alley and even installed a post for a birdfeeder. Besides his craftsmanship, I so appreciated his consistent communication and the fact I could count on him to do what he said he would do when he said he would do it! He finished the project two wks ahead of the time frame specified in the contract.

Home Build Year: 1925

Description Of Work: Hal Morris removed our old fence and constructed a new one; removed the old deck and built a new one; built a new platform for our screened-in cabana area; and removed a rotting sliding glass door and corrected old structural issues surrounding that area and put in a new door.

Comments: We brought Hal in just for an estimate on building a new deck for us. During the conversation, it came out that we were seeking estimates for a new fence, as well, and he showed us examples of the kinds of fence work he'd done in the past.
Hal worked very closely with us, getting to know our home, our family, and designing a deck and a fence that spoke to the house's prairie style architecture, while still meeting our needs. His work, frankly, is gorgeous and unique. He is incredibly thorough and conscientious: he doesn't allow substandard work and is present throughout the project.  Hal is an artist as well as someone who has "know-how." He attended to numerous structural issues with the house. I expect the deck and the fence to outlast humanity. And for those with budget concerns, like us, Hal is very competitively priced and he works within your budget. But, just as others have commented, it's the "Garden Structures
AND MORE that we received from Hal. We definitely have the best looking fence and deck structures around! Definitely check out his website.  We plan to work with Hal on more projects on our aging home!

Description Of Work: Hal designed, built and installed a very nice one of a kind wood fence for our back yard.

Comments: The design of our fence is unique and original due to Hal's artistry. We get lots of compliments on the looks and craftsmanship of the fence. Hal was good to work with. He was patient with us even though we changed our minds a couple of times during the process. He really wanted to be sure we were satisfied. He got the job done on time and everything was as expected. He checked back in with us later in the summer. There were a couple of decorative boards that had warped on the fence and he promptly replaced them. We liked working with Hal because of the personal touch he gave. You don't get that with the big companies, and our dog loves him too.

Approximate Cost: $3,000.00

Description Of Work: We had a privacy fence installed with two gates with arbors.

Comments: We got estimates from several places. We wanted to do something a little bit unique but also inexpensive, and we were open to different ideas. Hal (who owns the company and I think is in charge of all the work) offered good ideas and design at the same price as other companies were offering something highly generic (we didn't want yet another dog-eared fence). The design incorporated both what we wanted, and ideas on his part that kept it affordable and added some interesting design features.

He got the designs together, got feedback, and did custom woodworking of many of the pieces. He pushed us ahead of schedule to get posts in before we did some walkway work that we wanted to build in around the posts. They finished everything up later as planned, Hal was on site the entire time. We did have a problem with the design of one of the gates, it didn't match what we had discussed, but he saw the problem and redid that portion of the work.

So, I feel good about the experience. The result is solid, usable, attractive, and was affordable.

A minor complaint is that he did the cutting of treated wood on our lawn, and I'm pretty sure the chemicals from the sawdust damaged the lawn -- the grass still isn't as healthy in that spot. Also the curve of the arch didn't match our existing entryway arch as we had discussed, but I didn't really feel like making an issue of it after it had already been fully constructed. In retrospect for something very exacting like the curve of an arch I might want to lay it out on graph paper to make sure we had exactly the same thing in mind.

Description Of Work: Custom garden fence with trellis.

Comments: Hal Morris had done other work at our home, so when I called him with the need for a fence, I knew I would get something unique. I needed a fence tall enough to keep the rabbits out of my vegetable garden, but short enough for me to step over, and with removable sections so I could get a roto-tiller or other equipment into the garden. Hal designed a fence that fit the bill elegantly. The removable sections--which he designed with an ingenious bracket system--are sturdy and reliable. The fence is beautiful: I have probably gotten ten compliments on it from alley passers-by. Perhaps best of all, Hal convinced me to turn the back of the garden fence into a trellis for pole beans. This summer crop was a bumper one, and the trellis helped to make it so. If you need an artistic but practical solution to your fence or decking needs, employ Hal Morris.

Approximate Cost: $1,380.00

Description Of Work: We needed to have two wooden gates both 3'6" wide replaced.
We also needed 20 feet of fencing (4' high) replaced.
The old fencing and gates were removed by Hal and his men.

Comments: When I called Hal Morris (owner of the company) he came out immediately to give us an estimate. I went over what needed to be done and we talked about the kind of wood that Hal felt would be best.
Hal was honest about his work schedule (can't work in the rain) and set the date that he could start. Hal worked with two other men. They worked very hard for the first day. They had to tear out the old fencing and gates and dig holes for the new posts. They had to do a little gardening as well (removing weeds) to clear a place for the new posts and fencing. When the cement was poured for the posts, Hal also let me know that they would give it at least 72 hours to set up before continuing the job. He was back when he said he would be. Hal also suggested we use a certain design for the fencing, which we did and it looks great. The new gates took a little adjustment since they were a little different than I thought they would be but I think Hal's design for them is very nice.
After the job was done in a timely fashion, I called Hal to ask if he could lower the bottom of one of the gates so our grand dog wouldn't get out. I also called to report that the spring system on one of the gates did not seem to be working even though it was working fine when the job was originally finished. Hal called to say he would get there as soon as possible. Hal was working on other jobs and there was a lot of rain this Summer but he returned fairly quickly in response to the adjustments I needed. He fixed both!
Hal is fairly easy to work with and has suggestions for what he thinks needs to be done and what will work best.
He educated me in the various kinds of woods that could be used for the job and which would be the best for our purposes.
I will be watching our fencing and our next door neighbors to see whose lasts the longest.......I think ours will.
Thanks Hal

Description Of Work:

Description Of Work: Hal Morris widened our existing deck by 3 feet and softened the back of our white stucco house by adding three 8 foot lattices for climbing plants, a larger lattice with an overarching pergola for shade vines to grow up, railings, flower boxes, wood boxes, and two floating benches.

Member Comments: I agree with the positive comments here. The key to Hal Morris's "garden structures" work is the "and more." He is really more of an architect than a deck builder, or an artist with a hammer rather than a brush. He works with the existing forms of your house and your own preferences to design a structure that works for you. He solves problems. Our problem: a too stark, too big back to our white stucco house. His solution: a pergola for shade vines, flower boxes with more latticework, and a wider deck with floating benches to sit on. Best of all, he works with you as you work out a solution together. I can’t believe all that we got for the money.

Member Comments: We were looking to build a new and unique fence for our yard. We got quotes from the "big" fence companies but were not happy with the expensive price tags for generic designs. Hal, however, worked with us within our budget to design a unique and eye-catching piece for our yard. The actual construction was completed well ahead of schedule and there were no cost overruns. The fence was wonderfully designed and was built with great attention to detail. Hal's unique design and choice of exceptional materials has really added phenomenal curb appeal to our home. We've received nothing but glowing compliments from our neighbors, friends, and family. We would highly, highly recommend using Hal for any type of fence or garden structure.

Description Of Work: We replaced an old fence with a new fence, designed and installed by Hal.

Member Comments:

Overall, we are quite happy with the results and with Hal's work. He helped with the new fence design and gave good suggestions and ideas based on his experience. He hand selected the wood, planed and sanded each piece carefully, and did the installation. One glitch was that Hal misjudged the variants in the yard slopes, thereby leaving large gaps at the bottom of the fence, however, this was something he corrected (adding boards to the bottom of the fence) after we discussed it with him. He takes great pride in his work and is attentive to most details, providing a high quality finished product. We'd recommend Hal for anyone considering a fence repair/replacement you can be proud of.

Description Of Work: Hal designed and built a large scale planter+trellis for our backyard.

Member Comments: I had some good photos and ideas before Hal arrived to give the bid. He listened carefully and then added some of his own comments about the size and placement of the planter. He helped us see how a minor change in placement, suggesting appropriate plantings              and vines, could improve our idea. The workmanship was excellent -- we are so pleased with the result. The trellis sits further away from our porch than originally planned, but provides a new focal point (we added lighting per Hal's suggestion).

Description Of Work: Hal designed, built and installed four trellis structures for our garden.

Member Comments: The basic wood structures are sturdy and finely finished. Hal created beautiful copper embellishments that set these trellises apart from anything else we have ever seen. The    installation was complicated            because digging the post holes in our rocky soil took much longer than expected, but he honored the original bid. Given the fine workmanship, these trellises were a real bargain.

We had Hal help us design a new gate to the back yard, small privacy fence, and entry to the garden. He has a true artist's eye and was very helpful in making design suggestions based on our orginal concept. He also worked with us to keep the costs reasonable. Hal and his crew came in a did their work and cleaned up after. It was absolutely great. We are extremely happy with what Hal installed for us. We appreciate his workmanship and attention to detail in addition to his eye for esthetics. Hal gave us a bid for a picket fence and arbor. Although the price was reasonable, it was outside of our budget. So he redesigned the fence and modified the arbor and fit within our budget. He started exactly on time and ended on the date he said he would. The fence is gorgeous and has encouraged our neighbor to hire him also for a pergola and our other neighbor went out and bought 40 shrubs to adorn the fence on the other side where it currently is barren. Hal is a real person, a Vietnam vet who has tons of ailments but he still gets it done. A creative engineer type. Love him.

Home Year Build: 1907

Description Of Work:

He built a porch 14 ft x 6 ft, with a four foot railing that a has a surface on top to hold things, as well as a couple of bench seats. The deck goes across the back of the house. There are three steps down from the porch to the deck. Below this, he constructed a 14 ft by 20 ft deck with varying heights from the ground. He constructed a pergola 8 ft by 11 ft that comes up from one corner of the deck. The pergola is 7 feet to the support beams and above the beams there is an open peaked cover.

Member Comments:

The entire structure is made of pressure treated Southern Yellow Pine. The whole thing is on four foot cement footings so it is well secured in the ground. The supports for the pergola are 4 inch x 6 inch timbers. The structure is held together by mortise and tonen joints. The entire structure was treated with a clear sealer. The decking itself is 6 x 1.25 inch boards. It more than met my expectations, I was very pleasantly surprised with how it turned out. Morris showed that he is an expert carpenter and architect. He designed the entire thing. We worked closely and he consulted with me at each step of the construction. This was a very friendly, compatible relationship. I think his ability to design both structurally and aesthetically is very, very good. The structure fits in nicely with my house and garden. Visitors always comment favorably on it's appearance. He has done a number of projects for me in the past. At his recommendation I have trailed grape vines over the pergola and it has worked out nicely.

Work Done: Yes

Approximate Cost: $5,000.00

Description Of Work:

Design and construction of a unique pergola garden structure to cover part of an existing backyard deck. The area covered is approximately 12 X 12. The pergola is "free standing" in that it is not attached to the deck but is anchored (in concrete) in the ground just off the deck instead. This made for an extremely stable structure and also left the deck surface totally open and clear. The supporting uprights artfully frame trellises for climbing vines. The superstructure is strong, sturdy, and architecturally interesting and attractive. The top pieces form a custom horizontal lattice pattern that is aesthetically pleasing in its own right (even without vine coverage) while also serving to support the decorative flowering vines. On one end, separate from both the deck and the main pergola, is a large stylized vertical trellis that serves double duty as a combination privacy fence and vine carrier for the pergola. An airy, shady, wonderful and comfortable outdoor room.

Member Comments:

Initially, Hal consulted with us on our needs, aesthetic tastes, and personal ideas regarding the proposed structure. He then went off to the drawing board and created detailed drawings that truly took all those factors into consideration. He discussed these drawings with us, we agreed upon some slight modifications, and then off he went to his carpenter shop. Every inch of the treated southern yellow pine boards he used was planed and edged and cut to precise specifications. Some components were assembled at his shop, others on site. The on-site work went quickly and smoothly, with perfectionist like care and conscientiousness at every step. The finished product exceeded our high expectations. Hal even advised us on what kind of vines to plant and where to get them, advice which we followed and are happy we did. Comprehensive service, quality work, great finished product, totally reasonable cost. Hal is a true artisan, a fine craftsman, and an extremely congenial "colleague".
